A few hours later, Tobin found her. She didn’t open her eyes when he picked her up and carried her to his horse. He rode slowly home with her holding tight to his shirt.

He didn’t try to say anything. He knew no words would comfort her.

When they reached the barn, Tobin carefully stepped down from his horse and turned toward the house. Her face was buried against his shoulder.

As he moved past the first stall, the Roak shouted, “What’d you do to her?”

Tobin glanced over at the boy. He’d forgotten all about him. “Nothing.”

The kid struggled against his ropes. “If you hurt her, McMurray…”

For a moment Tobin just stared. The kid looked as if he’d gladly kill him. Then Tobin realized Roak thought he’d hurt his own sister. The idea made him angry and then sad that the boy would even think such a thing was possible.

Tobin softened slightly. He stared straight at the dark eyes so full of anger. “She’s not hurt physically. She just learned that the man she cared about died.”

The kid looked from Tobin to Sage. “Oh,” he said, almost in a whisper.

Tobin moved toward the house as he felt Sage cry softly against his shirt.
